Overview

Located just a short journey from Arusha city in northern Tanzania, Arusha National Park is a remarkably diverse protected area where volcanic mountains, lush forests, crater lakes and open grasslands come together in one beautiful landscape.

Covering approximately 552 square kilometres, the park is dominated by Mount Meru, Tanzania's second-highest mountain. Its forested slopes support an abundance of wildlife, while the Momella Lakes and Ngurdoto Crater reveal the fascinating geological history of the region.

Unlike the vast plains of Serengeti or the elephant-rich landscapes of Tarangire, Arusha National Park offers a more intimate experience centred on scenic beauty, diverse habitats and opportunities to explore nature at a slower pace. Visitors may encounter giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, black-and-white colobus monkeys and numerous bird species. Large predators are not a principal attraction here, making the park especially appealing to travellers interested in landscapes, primates and gentle wildlife encounters.

Arusha National Park is also an excellent destination for walking safaris and Mount Meru trekking expeditions, subject to park regulations and suitable arrangements. Its convenient location makes it ideal for a day trip, a first safari experience or an addition to a longer Northern Tanzania itinerary.

With Providence Safari, discover the park through carefully designed experiences that combine scenic game drives, guided exploration and authentic encounters with Tanzania's remarkable natural heritage.

Best Time to Visit

June to October — The Dry Season

The dry season generally offers comfortable conditions for wildlife viewing, scenic game drives and walking safaris. Rainfall is often lower, and some trails may be easier to navigate, although conditions on Mount Meru can remain cool, cloudy or wet.

Ideal for: Wildlife photography, scenic exploration, walking safaris and travellers combining several Northern Circuit destinations.

November to December — The Short Rains

Seasonal showers refresh the forests and grasslands, creating lush scenery and beautiful mountain landscapes. Birdwatching can be rewarding, and the park's lakes provide attractive photographic opportunities.

Ideal for: Birdwatching, green landscapes, forest photography and nature enthusiasts.

January to March — Warm Conditions and Mountain Adventures

These months often provide opportunities for game drives, walking experiences and Mount Meru trekking, depending on current weather conditions. Clear mornings can reveal beautiful views of the mountain, while cloud cover and afternoon rain remain possible.

Ideal for: Scenic safaris, mountain photography and trekking during suitable weather windows.

April to May — The Long Rains

The long-rain season transforms the park into a vibrant green landscape. Waterfalls and forest vegetation may become especially impressive, but heavy rainfall can make certain roads and trails muddy or difficult.

Ideal for: Lush landscape photography, birdwatching and travellers comfortable with variable weather.

Our Recommendation

Arusha National Park can be visited throughout the year. June through October is generally a strong choice for drier safari conditions, while January through March may also suit Mount Meru trekking when weather permits.

Mountain conditions can change rapidly, and visibility, walking routes and trekking access should always be confirmed before travel. Providence Safari will help choose the most suitable period for your planned experiences.

Travel Tips

Dress for Changing Mountain Weather

Arusha National Park's elevation creates conditions that can change throughout the day. Wear comfortable layers and carry a light waterproof jacket, particularly when visiting forested or higher-altitude areas.

Bring Binoculars and a Camera

Binoculars are useful for observing birds, monkeys and wildlife at a distance. A camera with sufficient battery power is ideal for capturing the park's dramatic mountain and crater scenery.

Consider a Guided Walking Safari

Walking safaris are among the park's most distinctive experiences. They must be arranged through authorised providers and conducted in accordance with park safety requirements.

Plan Mount Meru Treks Carefully

Mount Meru is a demanding high-altitude trek requiring appropriate fitness, equipment and acclimatisation planning. Allow sufficient time for the expedition and follow the advice of qualified mountain guides.

Watch for Forest Wildlife

Keep an eye on the forest canopy for black-and-white colobus monkeys and other primates. Wildlife sightings vary naturally, so patience and quiet observation are valuable.

Respect Park Rules

Follow your guide's instructions, maintain a safe distance from wildlife and remain within permitted areas. Never feed animals or leave litter behind.

Allow Time for Scenic Stops

Arusha National Park rewards visitors who take time to appreciate its lakes, forests and viewpoints rather than rushing between attractions.

Prepare for Health and Comfort

Carry drinking water, sunscreen, insect repellent and any necessary personal medication. Seek appropriate medical advice before undertaking high-altitude trekking.
