Nestled at the base of the spectacular Great Rift Valley escarpment in northern Tanzania, Lake Manyara National Park is a remarkable destination where lush forests, open grasslands, wetlands and a vast alkaline lake come together in one extraordinary landscape.

Covering approximately 330 square kilometres, although the extent of the lake varies considerably with seasonal water levels, the park is renowned for its exceptional ecological diversity. Unlike the sweeping plains of the Serengeti or the baobab-dotted wilderness of Tarangire, Lake Manyara reveals its beauty through dramatic contrasts. A journey through the park may begin beneath the cool shade of a groundwater forest before opening onto sunlit plains and expansive lake views.

The park's wildlife includes elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, hippos, monkeys and large baboon troops. Its famous tree-climbing lions are an exciting possibility, while its rich birdlife makes it especially appealing to nature lovers and photographers. Seasonal changes influence wildlife movements, vegetation and the appearance of the lake, ensuring that each visit offers a different perspective.

Lake Manyara is also an excellent addition to Tanzania's Northern Safari Circuit. Its location near Mto wa Mbu and Karatu makes it a convenient destination to combine with Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Serengeti.

With Providence Safari, discover Lake Manyara through thoughtfully planned itineraries, knowledgeable safari guidance and experiences that celebrate the extraordinary diversity of Tanzania's natural heritage.

Best Time to Visit

June to October — The Dry Season

The dry season is generally an excellent time to explore Lake Manyara National Park. Vegetation becomes less dense in some areas, improving visibility, while wildlife may gather near dependable water sources. The weather is often relatively dry and comfortable for game drives.

Ideal for: Classic wildlife safaris, photography, elephant encounters and visitors combining several Northern Circuit destinations.

November to December — The Short Rains

The arrival of seasonal showers brings renewed greenery to the forest and surrounding landscape. Bird activity can be rewarding, and the changing scenery creates beautiful photographic opportunities. Rainfall patterns vary from year to year.

Ideal for: Birdwatching, green landscapes, nature photography and visitors who enjoy a quieter atmosphere.

January to March — Warm Weather and Diverse Birdlife

These months often bring warm conditions, with varying rainfall. The park's forest, wetlands and lake environments can provide rewarding opportunities to observe both resident and migratory birds. Wildlife viewing remains possible throughout the year.

Ideal for: Bird enthusiasts, wildlife photography and travellers seeking a combination of forest and lakeshore scenery.

April to May — The Long Rains

The long-rain season transforms Lake Manyara into a lush green environment. Dramatic skies, vibrant vegetation and changing lake conditions can make the scenery especially beautiful. However, heavy rainfall may affect some tracks and safari activities.

Ideal for: Landscape photography, lush scenery and travellers comfortable with unpredictable weather.

Our Recommendation

Lake Manyara is a year-round safari destination. For generally drier game-drive conditions, June through October is a strong choice. For green landscapes and rewarding birdwatching, the wetter months offer their own attractions.

Flamingo numbers, lake levels and wildlife sightings depend on natural seasonal conditions and cannot be guaranteed. Providence Safari will help select the most suitable travel period based on your interests.

Travel Tips

WhatsApp Image 2026-11-04 at 00.26.20.jpeg

Choose the Right Season

Lake Manyara can be visited throughout the year, but weather, vegetation and lake conditions change seasonally. The dry season often provides comfortable game-drive conditions, while wetter periods bring lush scenery and rewarding birdwatching.

Keep Your Camera Ready

The park's landscapes change quickly, from shaded forests to expansive lake views. Carry a camera or smartphone with sufficient battery power and storage to capture wildlife and scenic moments.

Bring Binoculars

Binoculars are especially valuable for observing Lake Manyara's diverse birdlife and wildlife at a distance. They can make a significant difference to your safari experience.

Wear Comfortable, Neutral Clothing

Choose lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral colours. A light jacket can be useful for cooler mornings, while a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses help protect against the sun.

Be Patient with Wildlife Sightings

Tree-climbing lions, elephants, flamingos and other animals move naturally throughout the park. Wildlife encounters cannot be guaranteed, so allow your guide time to explore suitable habitats.

Respect Wildlife and Park Regulations

Remain inside your safari vehicle unless your guide confirms that leaving it is permitted in a designated area. Never feed animals, avoid excessive noise and follow all park rules.

Prepare for Changing Conditions

Rainfall can affect road conditions, vegetation and the extent of the lake. Bring drinking water, suitable footwear and any necessary personal medication. Follow your healthcare professional's advice on travel health precautions.

Consider an Overnight Stay

Although Lake Manyara can be visited on a day trip from Arusha, staying nearby can provide a more relaxed itinerary and make it easier to combine the park with other Northern Circuit destinations.
